The Second Station: Jesus is Betrayed
We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.
Immediately, while he (Jesus) was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; and with him there was a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders. Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard.” So when he came, he went up to him at once and said, “Rabbi!” and kissed him. (Mark 14: 43-46)
Reflection
Jesus is betrayed by Judas with a kiss. Judas shows up with a mob, ready to take Jesus based on people’s accusations, misunderstandings, and/or hatred. This is no different than groups that have formed over centuries that target certain people because of their beliefs or identities, such as Neo-Nazi, Ku Klux Klan, White Nationalist, Anti-LGBTQI, Anti-Muslim, Anti-Asian, or any other group that fosters hate for our fellow human beings. The story of Jesus and his betrayal provides an early example of “lynching” that unfortunately continues to occur today, only it looks very different.
What can we do as followers of Christ? We can stand in solidarity with our neighbors in the margins. We can walk alongside those people who are excluded, beaten down, discriminated against, or treated unjustly. We can use our privileged voices to speak out against injustice for those whose voices cannot or will not be heard. We can LOVE, PRAY, and CARE for those whose needs are unmet.
Let us pray.
Almighty God, whose beloved Son willingly endured the agony and shame of the cross for our redemption: Give us courage to take up our cross and follow him striving for justice and peace in the world; through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.
Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy upon us.
