The Third Station: Jesus is Condemned

We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you:
Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, gathered together, and they brought him to their council. They said, “If you are the Messiah, tell us.” He (Jesus) replied, “If I tell you, you will not believe me; and if I question you, you will not answer. But from now on the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” All of them asked, “Are you, then, the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say that I am.” Then they said, “What further testimony do we need? We have heard it ourselves from his own lips!” (Luke 22: 66-71)

Reflection

Throughout history, the justice system has been flawed for a variety of reasons such as twisted social constructs and the need for power and wealth. While society has changed over time, the systemic flaws of inequality, injustice, and oppression occur today, despite looking different. People are still treated unjustly. Innocent people are convicted of crimes and unjustly sentenced because of color, gender, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.

What can we do as followers of Christ? We can stay involved in the legislative process, educating ourselves on bills and laws. We can make our voices heard for just and equal rights for ALL people. When people cannot advocate for themselves because they have been stripped of their dignity, like Jesus before the council, we are to be their voice. We share the love of Christ by staying educated and showing up on behalf of justice and peace.

Let us pray.

O God, you know us to be set in the midst of so many and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our nature we cannot always stand upright: Grant us such strength and protection as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Holy God,
Holy and Mighty,
Holy Immortal One,
Have mercy upon us.
